Fun For The Whole Family

On a lark, my husband and I decided that since we had new faux-hardwood floors, we totally needed a Roomba.

I'll pause here for a moment, so you may laugh and point.

I know. Nobody NEEDS a robotic vacuum, but come on! It is a lazy person's best friend, and I am a lazy, lazy woman.

So we purchased it. And we've been using it. And it rocks. It's just like a regular member of the family now. Except it actually cleans up and doesn't talk back.

The goal of this type of thing is apparently to turn it on, and walk away. It will clean, so you can do something else. The problem is this: I turn it on, and then stand around and watch it work. Never mind the fact that I could be washing dishes while it vacuums the living room. Heck, I could be sitting somewhere with my feet up, reading a tabloid and eating bon-bons. But no.

My inner geek is enthralled by watching this frisbee drive around, ricocheting off walls and furniture. It feels a bit like those photos of families in the 1930s, watching their radios as they listened to a favorite show.

Since my oldest child became mobile, I have cursed their psychotic need to run around the area that is being cleaned, flapping their arms and SQUEELing like hyperactive rodents. Whether the thorough redistribution of dirt is their ultimate goal is irrelevant. It. Makes. Me. Nuts.

Now, they chase the Roomba. Hah! It works in mysterious ways, so they trip along behind the damn thing like it's the mother ship, frequently bodychecking one another into stationary objects when the vacuum zigs or zags. Yeah, they'll spread the dirt around, but hey! The thing keeps working until it gets it all, so WHATEVAH.

If I had known that this thing would be such a hit, I would have just skipped getting the dog.

You know, those things scare me...any electronic device that can move itself is creepy...I mean who's to say it won't try to suck up your feet or something...or kill you while you sleep...It's like those Honda robots on the commercials, CREEPY!

Perhaps this compulsion to watch is a result of your Dork Gene? HEhehehe. I have a feeling that I would do the same thing!

Omg! I need a roombah now! :)

why have I not heard of this invention? what does it do if it gets near stairs? what is the battery life? how long does it take?

I am totally salivating.

ooh i got one for christmas and LOVE IT. it totally rocks on hardwood (real or faux). the cats walk behind it like it's leading them to food and the dog just backs away with a scared look in his eyes. the boy sees it and shrieks in delight (actually, so do i!)

That is so cool!!! I've seen one in a potato chip ad, but I had no idea "real" people could have one. I would want to sit around and watch it, too. I can only imagine what the kids would say. Does it do carpet at all? Maybe I need to go look this thing up.

Too freaking cool. Am I a complete geek without it? I think not. Now, to work on dh.

Hi! Found you via Lindsey and just have to say you are a freaking riot(yeah that's a compliment...lol) I'm adding ya to my reads if that's ok?

Does it discriminate between little bits of dirt and Cherrios, and, say, a microscopic yet prized piece to a toy set? Does an alert sound if it picks up Tiny Mr. Bad Guy's miniature gun accessory?

**runs off to buy a roomba**

When you first said roomba, I thought the dance. That's how out of it i am.

I want one! Not vacuuming sounds perfect to me and making the dog and children go insane would be quite the bonus.

OMG that's hilarious.

I always wondered how well those things work. Does it pick up everything or does it miss a lot of stuff? If I locked it in the bathroom, would it pick up all the hair on the floor so that the next time I open the bathroom door, hairballs don't float past?!

Roomba, yes, must have a Roomba! Only one question - does it do carpets?

Ok, after much research - which Roomba did you get? The Roomba Red? The Roomba? The Roomba Discovery? The Roomba Discover SE? Well? Well?

It cleans AND entertains the kids? I'm putting in hard wood floors!
