Shoulders Back, Head Up

When I woke up to yet another drizzle-marred morning, I wanted to burrow back under the covers. Now, the clouds have parted and patches of sunlight are illuminating my deck. It is shocking how much better I feel.

I'm on day ten of daily exercise. I'm achy in my muscles, but it's that good-achy. It feels like I've been having fun. My limbs are loose, my chest feels open, my spine is lengthened, my eyes are clear and my mood is greatly improved. (I hate it when the experts are right.)

I've just finished watching the Frontier House series that ran on PBS a long time ago. I love this kind of stuff. I was surprised to hear what the teenaged girls had to say at the end, once they'd returned to their mansion in Malibu. They were bored. They didn't appreciate any of the nice things they had, and missed having a vital role in their family's survival. "You get tired of going to the mall every day."

The father from this same family was obsessing about all the weight he was losing, so they sent out a doctor to evaluate him. He was irritated to be pronounced healthier than when he started the show. Hah.

I had a point to make, but it eludes me now. Alas.

Probably that I'm thinking that the kids need to work more. We have to make time to exercise. We follow perky, spandex-clad instructors on DVD when everything our ancestors did kept them in hard-muscled shape. I'm glad I'm not a frontier woman. Yeah, that was probably it.

Every time I throw my dirty clothes into my washing machine and load my dirty dishes into my dishwasher and put my groceries away in the fridge, I think about those pioneer women. I've seen that show, too. Damn. That was hard work. We have it easy. No wonder they were dead by the age of fifty.

Keep up the good work with your exercising!

We saw Frontier House when it originally aired and lurve-ed it.

That family's giant new Malibu house looked positively obscene after having watched them in their little cabin for months, didn't it?

And every time I pluck my eyebrow's now I think of that newlywed young woman when she looked at herself in the mirror and cried, "EEEW! I'm so UGLY! Look at my EYEBROWS!"

Really makes you appreciate our 21st century luxuries like lighted makeup mirrors...

Amazing how much better you can feel from A) a bit of sunlight and B) actively using that body of yours! Glad you're feeling sorta good. Nothing like it . . .

New exercise routines are the best!

So wonderful to hear about those reformed teens. I hope that their renewed focus on the family does not succumb to the ear-piercing stands and enticing Orange Julius stands that await them at the mall.

I am a new reader to your blog and I enjoy reading your posts very much. I applaud you as a terrific mom to your kids and for finding the time and energy to exercise. I have one daughter, Elisabeth, who is 2 1/2, I am in college, work and am planning a wedding. I cannot exercise for three more weeks because I just had surgery. I like to run but the doctor said I can't do that yet. I am tired all the time and I know running helps me to feel better. I can only imagine how crazy your days and nights are and you give me inspiration to get back into shape. Thank you!

Ah yes, working out and taking Kung Fu made me feel like I could rule the world. So I had to stop, I can't handle that much power. I am much more content being a lazy slob.

I walk for 20 minutes each morning on a treadmill in our fitness center at work. It gives me a good start to the day, and I feel like I've done something good for myself.

Keep up the exercising.
And have a great day!

Delurk...
Oh yeah, I loved Frontier House, I've even watched it twice now, the Christian woman drove me nuts, she was so sanctimonious I wanted to slap her.
Relurk...

I loved Frontier House, too. The mansion family was interesting and so were their comments at the end. I agree with you.
