Worst mother in the world, part 900
Last weekend, I was on the phone with my mom when I heard a blood-curdling scream from the front yard. I got off the phone and headed for the front door, and was greeted by my 10 year old daughter, clutching her arm and yelling her head off.
It seems that some sort of game had gone awry as they typically do around here, and my son fell or stepped or something on my daughter, driving her hand into the ground and bending her wrist back.
Despite the initial howling, within 5 minutes she was reduced to snivelling, and an icepack, a dose of tylenol and a call to the Kaiser advice nurse had us convinced that she had maybe, MAYBE a sprain, but she was probably fine.
There was no bruising. There was only a tiny bit of swelling, and nothing that indicated a break. She had full range of motion and was not complaining of any pain. So we carried on through the final week of school with little disruption of our activities.
One of her baseball games was canceled, and when she was still mentioning that it "felt achy" when she let her arm dangle loose against her side, I kept her home from practice and made a doctor's appointment.
My husband took her to the appointment this afternoon, and he said that Dr. Hot thought it was nothing too. But the xrays showed that whatever the main bone in the forearm is was buckled by some sort of impact. She was sent home with a wrist brace, and we're expecting a call from the cast people on Monday.
3 weeks minimum. This effectively ends her baseball season, not to mention any plans for swimming for the next little bit. She's bummed about the swimming, not so much the baseball, but in any case, I feel like a jerk for not getting her in to be seen earlier.
Then again, even the doctor was fooled, until the xrays came back.
On another note - the final day of school came and went, and today was the first day of summer vacation. It was pretty darn okay, considering.

My daughter had the same kind of break a few years ago, and here's what you do once the (hopefully neon colored) cast is on: go to the craft store and buy "jewels" and then use the glue gun to attach them to her cast. My daughter got so many compliments on hers that she was disappointed when she got her cast off sooner than expected!

I would have done the same thing. You're definitely not the worst mother in the world.

They have a waterproof cast that allows swimming!! My son broke his arm last summer and swam for all 6 weeks in a cast. Insurance didn't cover it but it was the best $75 I've ever spent!

I did the same thing with Lex's broken arm (the first one) so you are totally in good company. Hope she heals quickly xoxo

Last May my daughter broke *um* something... right at the beginning of tumbling class... and swimming... definitely not fun. I poo-pooed her whining about how much it hurt... until it REALLY swelled up awhile later. oopsie :)
PS - I like the new look here girl!

When I was in 4th grade, I fell on the playground next to my house, my sister ran home to tell my dad I'd broken my arm. He drove over the lawn in a dramatic rescue -- to bring me hom and sit me on the couch. It wasn't until two weeks later that they finally took me to the emergency room and then insurance threatened not to pay the claim because it must not have been an emergency if they waited two weeks. Nice.
In other words, my parents did the same thing to me and they are FABULOUS parents.

Okay! I miss a few days and LOOK what happens! Oh, for crying out loud! You guys! I'm SOOOO sorry! Must throw my hat into the broken arm arena: we did it last year at this time, too. A humble way to start the summer. Time flew by, though. The worst part was the "heat" from the new cast as the plaster set itself.. Maybe she won't have that though. We're sending thoughts of healing for you all! Hang in there, JR!
