Afterburners

NaBloPoMo #11

I know Veteran's Day is an important day. That said - having the kids home all day on a Wednesday was giving me flashbacks to this last summer of full-time hours with no child care. The inmates were running the asylum today and I white-knuckled it through.

That seems like my new normal, though - white-knuckles. My mom and I were talking tonight about logistics for the next weeks and months, and talking about how life doesn't slow down a bit, even when you add more tasks to your pile.

"I don't know how you get it all done," she said.
"I don't clean house or grocery shop," I said.

Lest you think I'm kidding, I haven't actually grocery shopped in three weeks - not big shopping anyway. We've picked up staples here and there:

We've had milk but no cereal.
We've had cereal, but no coffee or juice.
We've had eggs but no milk.
We've had bread, but nothing to put on it.
We've had bacon. Well, nothing wrong with that. Bacon. Mmmm.
We've eaten dinners like spaghetti tossed with olive oil and frozen peas and stale pretzels.
We've eaten way too much fast food.

But when I served a giant pot of oatmeal for dinner with the last apple chopped up in it, it dawned on me that I need to actually go shop. Like, really really shop. So, tomorrow I'm taking the first hour after the kids are in school to remedy the sad grocery situation. I'm also going to invest in some of those Dinner My Way dinners that are so awesome to have on hand.

And let's not mention the house cleaning. We're working on it.

my daughter is sick, so has been home for the last few days. She was sick on her holiday, which made her mad. No fair! After three days of "Mom, I need..." and "Mommy... can you..." I'm ready to send her back to school today, snotty nose and all.
